Success stories – John, Loire
John turned his dream of owning a property in mid France into a reality, after falling in love with it after a fishing holiday. He and his family are now enjoying everything the Loire has to offer including the wine- oh and a spot of fishing!
Why did you choose to buy a property in Loire France?
I went on a carp fishing holiday in the Loire Valley. In-between catching some of the biggest Carp I have seen, I dreamt on having my own place there with fishing close by.
Eventually I had to come home to the rat race and spent all my free time searching the net for properties for sale in the area.
I realised that my dream could actually become a reality as there were some great properties around mid France which were affordable, even for me.
The property was my dream initially but the wife and the kids love joining me in the summer months, where we now spend weeks during the summer holiday, just enjoying rural France- oh and a bit of fishing.
How did you find the French property buying process?
We financed the French property with a French mortgage and it was investigating this that got the ball rolling and things seemed to fall into place from there, so it wasn’t really too stressful or difficult. We knew it was advisable to get a good French lawyer to provide advice and we got in touch with our lawyer quite early on. They were really helpful in guiding us through and making sure everything was done properly so I don’t remember there being many problems. We just let everyone else tell us what we needed to do. We just sat back with a bottle of red (getting ourselves into the French way!).
What was the most stressful part of buying a property in France?
There was no stress really. The most difficult bit I suppose was setting up the utilities as my French was limited (although getting a bit better now) but we managed to get there in the end. In hindsight we should have asked the estate agent or lawyer to help with this but we did not give it much thought at the time.
What are your top tips for people looking to buy property in Loire, France?
- Go for it and live your dream!
- If you don’t speak much French, instruct an English speaking French lawyer to over see the purchase and tell you what you need to know.
- Before you go on your first trip ensure the utilities are connected, maybe see if the estate agent or lawyer can help with this.
- If you want to use the property all year, make sure there is adequate heating as it can get cold in the winter months.
