Getting a Portuguese Fiscal Number
If you are undertaking any official matters in Portugal, such as buying a property or even setting up an account with a utilities company you will be asked to provide your fiscal number.
What is a Portuguese Fiscal Number?
A fiscal number is a tax identification number and is known in Portugal as a Número de Identificação Fiscal (NIF), or sometimes a Número de Contribuinte.
A fiscal number is necessary for anyone who wishes to undertake any official matters in Portugal, including buying a property.
What do you need a Fiscal Number for in Portugal?
A fiscal number is needed to perform tasks such as:
- Opening a bank account in Portugal
- Inheritance of assets in Portugal
- Selling a property in Portugal
- Buying a property in Portugal
- Obtaining credit or a Mortgage in Portugal
- Studying in Portugal
- Buying a car in Portugal
- Applying for a driver’s license in Portugal
- Receiving social security benefits in Portugal
- Setting up a phone line or utilities in Portugal
Even if you don’t plan to become a resident of Portugal, you will still need a fiscal number to do any of the above.
If you are purchasing a property and more than one person will be named on the title of the property, each named individual will need their own tax identification number.
How do you get a Fiscal Number in Portugal?
There are a few ways in which you can obtain a Portuguese fiscal number:
If you are buying a property in Portugal and are instructing an independent Portuguese Lawyer, probably the easier way of obtaining a fiscal number is to ask them to obtain it on your behalf.
Your Portuguese lawyer will be able to advise you of what documents are needed to obtain your tax identification number in Portugal. Usually, they will need a copy of your passport and a Power of Attorney which explicitly gives them permission to request a fiscal number on your behalf. A Portuguese lawyer can easily prepare this document for you. This will need to be signed in front of a Notary in either the UK or in Portugal.
You can also apply for a fiscal number in Portugal yourself if you are an EU resident. You can apply in person at a local tax office (Financas) with some official identification (such as a passport or EU identification card).
